January 17 - The Battle of Cowpens, South Carolina occurs with the American forces winning a decisive victory over the British.
March 1 - The United States Articles of Confederation is ratified.
March 15 - British military leader Cornwallis suffers heavy losses and abandons plans to control the Carolinas.
September 6 - Benedict Arnold loots and burns the American port of New London, Connecticut.
September 14 - American troops under Washington are transported to Williamsburg, Virginia by French ships.
September 28 - 9,000 American forces and 7,000 French forces begin the siege of Yorktown.
October 19 - General Charles Cornwallis surrenders to the Americans at Yorktown.
December 31 - The Bank of North America is officially chartered by Congress.
